Star light, Star bright….

I remember as a child when we would see a bright star in the sky and recite a poem..”Star light, Star bright, grant the wish I wish tonight.” That was long ago when life was simple, safe and innocent.

My best friend, Mary, lived across the street from me. We lived with our grandparents because in those days it was difficult to make ends meet unless several generations shared expenses and even then, life was a struggle. As children, we didn’t know about things like that. Mary and I were inseparable. We were together every day.

We had to be creative because we didn’t have a lot of toys. We made jewelry from China berries, paper dolls from the Sears Roebuck catalog and doll furniture from matchboxes and spools. We played games like Red Rover and Hide and Seek.

We were happy. We were thankful for everything we had. On a summer night, we had to be outside to keep cool. All the neighbors had swings on the front porch so there were lots of people outdoors.

As children, we caught lightning bugs and tied a string on a June bug’s leg so we could watch it fly. Our entertainment cost nothing. Memories of my childhood are refreshing, compared to the life of children today.

If I should be looking up at the sky now on a dark night and saw a bright star, my wish would be, “Lord, please heal our land, end the pandemic and restore our safety. Let us live in harmony and in peace, the peace that only YOU can give.”

  1. I’ve stopped watching local news, stopped watching national news, stopped subscribing to local newspaper – yet the ugliness in the world now can’t be avoided. All of Jean’s reminisces are mine also – such a sweet, wonderful, simple life we used to have. Wonder if we’ll ever see normal again?????
