Our Happy Family…

You don’t have to be kin by blood to be “family.” Our members of the Special Needs Department are definitely a family. We care about each other. A few members from the original classes of many years ago are still with us.

Over time the membership has grown. Before COVID, our highest attendance was fifty! We have room for many more! We don’t always have that many to attend, but under normal conditions it is a good number. The house mothers (caregivers) have vans that are used to bring them to church. For members who live at home, their family brings them.

We have a lot of singing and playing musical instruments. Many of the songs have lots of motions, so our members get some exercise, as well as having fun. Once a month, we have bell ringing. We distribute bells of different colors and the leader, holds cards up as music is playing. The members ring their bell when they see their color on the card that is being held up. It is always a “special” Sunday when we ring the bells!

Our teachers are so good ! They always include members in some way during the lesson. Everyone loves to take part. It may be holding up a sign or touching a place on the map. No one is shy! They look forward to participating!

We have lots of excitement when the Gamecocks win a game! Next Sunday we plan to have a tailgate party since football season just began. The members really enjoy the special celebrations. We have these celebrations at Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

We try to spread the word about our Special Needs Department, but not everyone knows we exist. If you are reading this and know of someone who might be interested, Please ask them to call the church office at 803 256-4251 for more information. We would love to add new members to “our family!”
